Glass guide

Can I repair a cracked glass panel?

Short answer: sometimes. Long answer: it depends on the crack type, where it is, and what the glass is doing. Here's a plain-English guide from our Sydney glaziers.

Types of cracked glass panes

Identifying the type of crack tells you whether repair is feasible. Here's the four most common.

Repair vs replace

When repair is feasible

A small subset of cracks are genuinely repairable. The rest need replacement. Here's the call.

Repair is on the table when…

These cracks can sometimes be filled with a clear repair resin. Cosmetic crack remains visible.

  • Minor hairline cracks, single pane, non-tempered
  • Small impact cracks under 25mm
  • Single-pane glass not in a structural assembly
  • Short-term fix until full replacement is scheduled
  • Low-traffic, non-safety locations

Replacement is required when…

Anything safety-critical or structurally compromised must be replaced - full stop.

  • Tempered (toughened) glass - repair compromises certified strength
  • Laminated glass with a damaged interlayer
  • Double- or triple-pane sealed units (IGUs)
  • Cracks near edges or in load-bearing locations
  • Multiple cracks or shattered surfaces
  • Doors, balustrades, low windows, shower screens (AS1288 zones)

DIY methods (with caveats)

DIY glass crack repair methods

These work for very small, non-structural cracks only. For anything safety-critical, please call a glazier.

Method 01

Glass repair resin

For small impact cracks under 25mm in single-pane non-tempered glass.

Available at hardware stores. The resin fills the crack and bonds with capillary action. Cosmetic appearance of the crack remains visible.

Features

  • Clean the crack with isopropyl alcohol
  • Apply resin per manufacturer’s instructions
  • Smooth with a razor blade as the resin cures
  • Cure under UV light for 60–90 minutes
  • Trim excess and polish
Method 02

Clear nail polish

Temporary fix for hairline cracks only.

A quick, very temporary measure to stop a crack from spreading. Not a permanent solution.

Features

  • Clean the area thoroughly
  • Apply 2–3 thin coats over the crack
  • Allow each coat to dry
  • Wipe excess with a soft cloth
  • Plan a real repair
Method 03

Cyanoacrylate (super glue)

Stop-gap for tiny chips that have not propagated yet.

Very small repairs only. The cured glue is brittle and visible. Not for anything safety-critical.

Features

  • Clean and dry the chip
  • Apply a single drop into the chip
  • Press a thin film of plastic over the area while curing
  • Trim cured excess
Method 04

Tape (temporary only)

To prevent crack propagation while you wait for a glazier.

Strong clear packing tape across both faces of a single-pane crack will slow the propagation. Not a repair – but it buys time.

Features

  • Clean both faces of the glass
  • Apply tape across the crack on both sides
  • Schedule a real repair within 48 hours
Risks

The risks of delaying glass repairs

A delayed repair gets more expensive over time. Here's why.

FAQ

Cracked glass questions, answered

Most cracked windows need replacement. Repair is only a viable option for small, non-structural impact cracks in single-pane non-tempered glass. Anything in a door, balustrade, low window, shower screen, or sealed unit must be replaced under AS1288.

A standard residential single-pane replacement is typically $250–$600 supplied and installed. Toughened or laminated safety glass is $400–$1,200. Sealed double-glazed unit replacement is $600–$1,800. We’ll quote in writing before any work starts.

Most home and commercial insurance policies cover accidental glass breakage. We coordinate directly with your insurer where you’d like – quoting, documentation, and replacement.

For standard glass we’re typically next-day or 2–3 days. Toughened/laminated to spec is usually 5–7 days. We’ll secure the opening with boarding the same day so your home is weather-tight and secure in the meantime.

New glass carries the manufacturer warranty (typically 5–10 years on toughened/laminated glass against spontaneous breakage). Workmanship is warrantied 12 months. Beyond that, glass behaves like glass – impact will break it.
